Our friends Pete and Jan are visiting with us for a few days. We'll play tourist here until Saturday and then we'll head to Paris for a long weekend. Yesterday we went to the town of Sarlat, an old medieval town restored in the 60s, the first in a series of restorations initiated by then minister of culture André Malraux back in the 60s. Sarlat is like a storybook town come to life - old winding streets, buildings of honey-colored stone, now with restaurants, fancy shops, everything a tourist could want, but also everything an artist could want. Here's an example of the varied architecture you'll see in this very special town:

Where is Sarlat in relationship to you all? And what will you be doing in Paris? Where are you staying - at Devillas or do you have a new favorite?
ReplyDeleteSarlat is about a 45 minute drive northwest. We've been there a few times now, drawn by Pommes de Terre Sarladais - sort of like hash browns cooked in goose fat. Yum! Not something you should eat every day but wow are they good.
ReplyDeleteWe're trying a new (to us) hotel in Paris this time, the Hotel Comelia, chosen almost completely by price. http://www.booking.com/hotel/fr/camelia.html?aid=324859;label=postbooking_confemail
Something I'm interested in doing is walking around the Jardin des Plantes, to see if I can find the names of some of the trees and shrubs in our yard here. I also just finished reading a book set in the early 1800s, about 2 women fossil hunters in Cornwall(who really existed) and one of the specimens one of them found is at the natural history museum there so it will be a treat to see the actual thing.
Our friends have also never been to the d'Orsay so we have an excuse to go there for the umpteenth time. Not that I ever need an excuse! I also want to take in the newly opened and redone Orangerie. Today we're off to Lascaux II - a good place to be in the rain. It finally started to rain a bit here. The sunfowers are happy for it. :-)
